Proverbs 27: 15-16

Proverbs 20:1

This Proverb says, “Wine is a mocker, and strong drink is a brawler, and whoever is intoxicated by it is not wise.” I think the keyword in this passage is ‘intoxicated.’ The Bible does not condemn drinking alcohol such as wine. However, the Bible does say, “Be not drunk with wine; rather be filled with the Holy Spirit.” I don't believe that it is wrong to drink wine in moderation. However, becoming drunk lowers our resistance…

Proverbs 19: 27-29

This Proverb says, “Cease listening, my son, to discipline, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.” Discipline is good because it keeps a person on the right path in life. However, discipline is usually not easy to accept as something that is good for us. The Word of God, the Bible, provides solid guidance for all of us. However, this guidance is sometimes difficult for us to follow. God’s guidance is frequently contrary to…

Proverbs 19: 26

This Proverb says, “He who assaults his father and drives his mother away is a shameful and disgraceful son.” A person who strikes his father has crossed a line in the eyes of God. He has crossed a very serious line. In roughly 1500 BC Moses led Israel out of Egypt to the promised land. This event is known as the Exodus. Israel’s population was about 1,000,000. During the Exodus, God gave Israel laws by which…

Proverbs 19: 24-25

This Proverb says, “Reprove one who has understanding and he will gain knowledge.” a person with understanding knows the right way to behave. However, sometimes even a person who understands the right way to behave will depart from doing what is right. When God disciplines such a person, that person will turn back to doing that which is right. This is because that person understands the linkage between their sin and the discipline they received. On…

Proverbs 19: 22-23

This Proverb says, “The fear of the Lord leads to life, so that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.” To fear the Lord is a good thing for it keeps us on the right path. When we were children we learned to fear our fathers. We knew that we would be disciplined when we broke the rules. This discipline was a deterrent to continuing to break the rules. We came to realize that our lives…

Proverbs 19: 20-21

This Proverb says, “Listen to counsel and accept discipline that you may be wise the rest of your days.” Discipline is a good thing. As parents we discipline our children for wrongdoing. In like manner, God disciplines us for our wrongdoings. God is our Heavenly Father. He created us and brought us into the world. As a father, he loves us and wants only the best for us. He wants to guide us to live our…

Proverbs 19: 18-19

This Proverb says, “Discipline your son while there is hope, and do not desire his death.” The Bible says that as parents we are to love, cherish, guide and yes, discipline our children. Children are not reasoning adults, and they need to be taught how to live. When they do right we should praise them. When they do wrong we should discipline them. Sometimes that means we should physically discipline them with a spanking. The Bible…

Proverb 19: 17

This Proverb says, “He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his good deed.” God wants us to be generous and kind to the poor and needy. We must not turn our backs on them when we are in a position to help. We cannot help all of the poor people in the world. However, God will bring some of them across our path. When that…

Proverbs 19: 15-16

These passages contain two distinct Proverbs. The first Proverb says, “Laziness cast into a deep sleep, and an idle man will suffer hunger.” As this Proverb says, laziness and idleness are not good things. God didn't put us on this Earth to sleep. We were all made for a purpose and should be active. There is a direct connection between poverty and laziness. Lazy people don't seek or try to get employment. Employment is necessary to…

Proverbs 19: 13-14

This Proverb says, “House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.” What does prudent mean? The dictionary defines prudent as acting with or showing care and thought for the future. How then would a would a prudent wife act or conduct her affairs within a marriage? A prudent wife would be one who does not spend money foolishly or excessively. A prudent wife would be thrifty, getting the…
