This Proverb says, “Cease listening, my son, to discipline, and you will stray from the words of knowledge.” Discipline is good because it keeps a person on the right path in life. However, discipline is usually not easy to accept as something that is good for us.

The Word of God, the Bible, provides solid guidance for all of us. However, this guidance is sometimes difficult for us to follow. God’s guidance is frequently contrary to our natural desire. This is because our natural desire is to sin and rebel against God’s guidance for us. We must not do that.

As Solomon indicates in his Proverb, departing from God’s guidance or following our own natural desires will start us down a dangerous path. We will begin to stray from God’s Word of knowledge. With each departure it will become easier for us to stray. Then, it will be more difficult to return to God’s pathway, which leads to life.

We must therefore resist temptations to stray from God’s guidance. Ignoring God’s guidance and failing to link His discipline to our sins is dangerous. If we don’t link God’s discipline to our sins, we may become enslaved to a sinful life.

When that happens we will become firmly established on the path that leads to spiritual death. The Bible indicates that we will spend eternity in Hell, if we die in bondage to sin.
