This Proverb says, “The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching the inmost parts of his being.” The essence of a person is their spirit or soul. Their spirit defines them, who they really are.

The Bible says that God tests our spirit to validate who we really are. In that sense the spirit is a lamp which illuminates us. It reveals the path that we truly want to follow in our lives. If we desire to pursue righteousness and obedience to God, our spirit will reveal that. Our spirit will also reveal our desire to turn from righteousness to sin.

The Bible also says that our spirit, which is the essence of our being, will last forever. Our spirit is eternal. We will exist throughout all eternity with our true self revealed. If our spirit is dedicated to righteousness and dedicated to God it will exist in paradise or Heaven. If, however, our spirit is given over to sin, it will exist in the agony of Hell forever.

There are some people who are openly given to sin. There are also some who are covertly given over to sin. However, they may appear to be religious and righteous. God will test them, and their true self will be revealed. On the other hand, God will also test the righteous to validate their true inner self and their desire to obey God.
