This Proverb says, “A man with an evil eye hastens after wealth, and does not know that want will come upon him.” A man with an evil eye is a description of an evil person. An evil person is one who does not believe in God. Satan, the father of evil, directs this person’s footsteps.
Therefore, such a person does not pursue righteousness or right living before God. This person may not even believe in God. Their focus in life is likely on gaining wealth or worldly possessions. They will pursue getting rich without regard or care for hurting others. They will lie and steal without care because they have no personal constraints. As this Proverb indicates, their path will eventually lead to their own destruction.
On the other hand, a person who lives rightly before God will not focus on gaining wealth. They will rather live in a way that pleases God. Their focus will be on right living. They will prosper because of their proper focus.
The Bible says, “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and the rest will be given to you as well.” When our motivation and focus is on God, He will bless us in many ways. This will likely include prosperity. However, we will not set our heart on possessions because we know that they are fleeting.
We will rather be content with whatever God provides. We will enjoy our life and possessions, and we will survive our tests and trials. More importantly God will see us as being righteous and we will likely be allowed into Heaven after we die.
