This Proverb says, “My son, give attention to my wisdom, incline your ear to my understanding, that you may observe discretion, and your life may reserve knowledge. For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and smoother than oil is her speech; But in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two edged sword. Her feet go down to death her steps lay hold of Sheol. She does not ponder the path of life; Her ways are unstable, she does not know it.” Solomon is warning his son about the pitfalls of giving in to his temptation to please the flesh. Solomon implores his son to apply wisdom and discretion in situations that present irresistible temptation.
The dictionary defines discretion as our freedom of judgment or choice. Having wisdom enables a person to make good choices when confronted with irresistible temptation. Having wisdom will enable a person to look beyond the temptation and see the destruction that will result from giving in to the temptation.
The Bible says that we all have freedom of choice for our entire lives. Therefore, we need to always be diligent in applying wise discretion in all situations. There will continually be a danger of turning away from God’s guidance and leaving the pathway that leads to Heaven. We therefore need to persevere in obeying God’s Word to the end of our lives if we want to go to Heaven.
