This Proverb says, “The Leech has two daughters, “give, give.” There are three things that will not be satisfied, four that will not say enough: Sheol and the barren woman; earth that is never satisfied with water, and fire that never says enough.” This Proverb has an overriding theme of lacking contentment. The writer points out several things that never have enough to be satisfied: Sheol, the destination of sinful people after they die, is never full. There is always room for more lost souls. The barren woman, or a childless woman that wants a child. She will never be content. A dry and barren earth that soaks up the sparse water it receives. And the fire that will keep burning as long as it has fuel. These all paint a picture of not being content.

This Proverb can be applied to people who are never content with their lives. They always want more things. This is not a happy existence. True happiness comes from being content with what we have. True happiness comes from inside of us rather than from external stimulation.

When we realize that God is real and provides us with what we need, we are on the road to contentment. Also, realizing that we came into this world with nothing, and we will leave this world with nothing helps us to be content.

A rich and full life will result when we place our trust in God. When we do that we will be content and truly enjoy what God has provided for us.
