This Proverb says, “Like the legs which hang down from the lame, so is a Proverb in the mouth of fools.” The Bible defines a fool as a person who does not believe in God. If a person does not believe in God, they cannot understand or effectively apply Proverbs in their life. Proverbs can only be understood or effectively applied by those who believe in God.

King Solomon wrote all of the Proverbs in the Bible. He was able to do this because God had granted Solomon wisdom greater than any other person in the world. Solomon was extremely wise. God granted Solomon this wisdom because he trusted in God. A person cannot have wisdom unless they believe in God. A fool does not believe in God. Therefore a fool cannot possess wisdom.

It follows that a fool cannot understand the Bible.  As this Proverb indicates, a Proverb in the mouth of a fool is worthless, just as a lame person’s legs are worthless to them. A fool cannot offer good advice to others about making good decisions. They do not know how to live or make good decisions themselves.

So, if you are around people who do not believe in God, do not trust or follow their advice. Such advice will lead you down the wrong path. Following such advice will lead to spiritual destruction and death.
