This Proverb says, “Wisdom is too high for a fool, he does not open his mouth in the gate.” The gate of an ancient city was an important location. Not only did it provide protection, it also was a cultural location for society. Important legal matters were decided at the gate. Public announcements were made there. It was a central gathering place for getting important information.
In addition to all of these characteristics of a city gate, it was also a place where leading or important city figures would give the people guidance. Their words of wisdom for the masses were spoken loudly at the city gate. The people would listen carefully to people they held in high esteem.
This Proverb indicates that a fool will keep quiet in such a setting. A fool has nothing beneficial to impart to the people.
The Bible says that a fool has said in his heart, there is no God. A fool truly believes that God doesn’t exist, so he closes his mind to the Truth. Rather, he embraces lies and satanic deceptions. Rejecting God is tantamount to rejecting wisdom. One must believe God to gain wisdom.
The Bible says that ‘the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.’ Wisdom must be cultivated over a lifetime. It doesn’t come naturally or instantly. Our wisdom will grow with time and produce understanding of the world around us. It will guide us in to a successful and prosperous life. More importantly, it will guide us to Heaven.
