This Proverb says, “He who loves purity of heart and whose speech is gracious, the king is his friend.” Solomon wrote this Proverb when he was King of Israel. He was a good king like his father, David. Solomon was a good king who initially walked according to God’s guidance. He had been influenced by his father King David to do so.
Because Solomon was a good king, he favored things that were also good. These were things that God deemed to be good. He favored good people over evil people. He favored those who treated others well and chose their speech carefully, so as not to hurt or offend.
Good kings in Israel like David and Solomon foreshadowed the future King of Israel, Jesus. Jesus will be the best king that Israel has ever had. Jesus will favor those who exhibit love toward others. He will favor those who choose their words carefully, so as not to cause harm.
Jesus will also favor those who demonstrate their love for God through being righteous, living according to the Word of God. The people who live righteously are those whose hearts are good. They have purity of heart.
God’s Commandments for Israel are summed up as follows: First, love God with your entire being. Secondly, love others as yourself. A person who loves purity of heart and whose speech is gracious demonstrates adherence to these commandments.
