This Proverb says, “Man’s steps are ordained by the Lord. How then can man understand his way?” The Bible says that before we were born all of our days were written for us. This indicates to me that God formed each of us to fulfill His purpose.
Additionally, God knows in detail how we will accomplish that purpose. God also knows the choices we will make during our lives to achieve His purpose. Because of this we might think that we do not have freedom of choice in our lives. However, we do have freedom to choose. Amazingly, God knows the choices we will make.
It is difficult for our human brains to reconcile predestination and free choice. However the Bible supports both of them. The Bible says God’s thoughts are above our thoughts. Therefore, we are not capable of understanding them.
One might reason, “What is the use of trying to live our lives rightly before God if all our days have been predestined for us?” However, having this knowledge reveals whether we truly want to choose to obey or to defy God and seek for self-pleasure. It reveals whether or not our inclination is toward good or toward evil.
I believe that it is very important to choose to live rightly before God. That is the only hope we have to gain Eternal Life. The Bible says, “Many are called, but few are chosen.”
