This Proverb says, “Do not slander a slave to his master, lest he curse you and you be found guilty.” What is slander? Slander is untrue criticism of another person. It is similar to gossip, which does much harm to another person.

Why would a person be motivated to slander another person? Perhaps the motivation is jealousy. The other person may possess something we lack and desire. It might be good looks, popularity, or possessions.

The Bible says we are not to covet or desire the possessions of another person. We are to be content with what God has provided in our lives. Coveting another another’s possessions is destructive. It leads to poor choices in any person’s life. It may lead to slandering the other person who possesses what we lack.

This Proverb indicates that slandering another person may ultimately lead to damage for the person who slanders another. The damage intended for the other person may ultimately return to them.

The Bible says that we are not to harm others. In fact, we are to love our neighbors as ourselves. We should be concerned for the welfare of those around us and seek for their good. If we live in this manner, good things will come our way. God will bless us. The result will be far better than the result of slandering another.
