In this daily Bible reading God commands Moses to take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites. The Midianites had corrupted many Israelis using their women to lead the Israeli men astray to worship the Midianite deities or demons. The Midianites purposely did this at the advice the prophet Balaam. So, Moses sent 12,000 warriors, 1000 from each tribe, to destroy the Midianites.
Israel killed all the Midianite men but spared some of the women and children. Moses commanded that all women who were not virgins and all the male children should be killed also. God was intent on keeping Israel pure and separate from the world’s corruption.
However, Israel did not stay separate for long. They were influenced by the other cultures and eventually worshipped their idols. This angered God. So God removed them from the land. Israel was scattered throughout the world.
All but one tribe of Israel lost their identity. The Tribe of Judah retained theirs. We refer to them as Jews. Jesus was born into the Tribe of Judah.
Today, we see many Jews from around the world returning to Israel. The Bible says that one day Jesus will return to the Earth and become King of Israel.
