In this Psalm David speaks about people who are considerate of those who are helpless, those who take time to help those who are less fortunate than we are. David says, “How blessed is he who considers the helpless; the Lord will deliver him in a day of trouble. The Lord will protect him and keep him alive. The Lord will sustain him up on his sickbed. In his illness Thou dost restore him to health.” This indicates to me that we are not to live selfish lives. We should help others in need.

Jesus said that there are two Commandments that drive how we are to live our lives: First, ‘love the Lord your God with all your heart with all your strength and all your mind.’ Second, ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’ Therefore, we should not ignore the poor and helpless. We should help needy people who cross our paths in life.

It is impossible to help all the poor and needy in the world. However, I believe that God will bring people into our lives that need help. When this happens, we must not turn our backs. We are called to give of ourselves to help them. We will know when God urges us to help someone. We should then welcome those opportunities to give our help. God will bless us for doing so.
