In this Psalm David speaks to the cycle of suffering and joy in his life. David says of God: “For His anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.” David’s life was not ‘all roses.’ He endured times of despair. David knew that good times would return. However, he had to endure and survive the bad times.
David’s life was similar to the lives of believers. Their lives are not ‘all roses’ either. Each of our lives has a mixture of good and bad times. However, as believers we trust in God for our protection and guidance. We will experience the cycles of pain and joy. With each experience our trust in God will grow. We know that good times will return. However, surviving or enduring the bad times is not fun. It takes practice and a sustained hope.
During these bad times we must focus on the Word of God for encouragement. Reading the Bible each day will give us that hope for the good times to return. The bad times will strengthen our Faith in God. That is a very good thing for us. We should realize that God is shaping us into the people he wants us to become.
