This is one of my favorites Psalms. This Psalm paints a picture of the life of the believer. The life of the believer progresses from initial belief in God to serving the Lord. Finally, a believer’s life results in living with God in Heaven.
The beginning of a believer’s life is characterized by God turning that person away from sin. In this regard the psalmist says, “He restores my soul; He guides me in the path of righteousness.”
When one believes in God and trusts God for guidance and help, fear goes away. In this regard the psalmist says, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for Thou art with me.
God then leads a believer to serve Him. The psalmist says, “Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Thou hast anointed my head with oil. My cup overflows.”
Finally, the believer is allowed to live with God in Heaven. The psalmist says, “Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
God guides and shapes a believer throughout their life. The Bible calls this the process of Sanctification. We are sanctified into people who God will allow into Heaven for all eternity. What a glorious future awaits those who believe.
