This Psalm speaks of those who do not believe in God worshiping idols. Their idols come in the form of material possessions, things that have no lasting value.
The Psalmist writes, “The idols of the nations are but silver and gold, the work of man’s hands.” God on the other hand is a living being who can hear, speak, and the see.
The Psalmist further indicates that we will become like that which we worship. If we worship lifeless material things, we will become lifeless. However, if we worship God, we will have life, true life for all eternity.
The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil. We can either love money or we can worship God. We cannot do both.
Having many possessions is not bad in and of itself. However, if we set our hearts on our material possessions, we will become enslaved by them. They will control us.
On the other hand, if we set our hearts on God we will be free to live a life filled with love and joy. That is a far better choice.
