In this Psalm the writer appeals to God to be gracious to us in spite of the fact we do not accept God’s Truths. In fact, we mock some of God’s Truths. The writer says, “Be gracious to us, O Lord, be gracious for we are greatly filled with contempt. Our soul is greatly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease and with the contempt of the proud.”
What does it mean to scoff. It means to speak about an idea or person in a way that shows they think that the idea or person is stupid. Many people speak of God’s Truths with scoffing and contempt.
One good example of a Truth that many people mock is the Gospel message of Jesus Christ. The Gospel message says that Jesus Christ is God’s Son who became a man. He was free of any sin. God sacrificed Jesus for the sins of mankind. Jesus’ blood atoned for the sins of those who would believe in Him. Only those who believe in Jesus will be allowed into Heaven.
The Bible says that “the Gospel message is foolishness to the Greeks.” It is mocked and scorned by many because it doesn’t make logical sense.
However, God can change our hearts to believe His Truths. He can remove our scoffing and replace it with Faith to believe. I personally know that this is true.
