In these passages, King David writes the following: “Give me understanding, that I may observe Thy law, and keep it with all my heart. Make me walk in the path of Thy commandments for I delight in it. Incline my heart to Thy testimonies.” We must have understanding to benefit from the Word of God, the Bible. If we don’t understand what we are reading, we will not know how to live or what to do.
We must also truly love the Word of God in order to be compelled to read it on a regular basis. If reading the Bible is tedious for us, we won’t be inclined to read it daily. When the Bible is a joy to us and we read it regularly, we then gain knowledge. This knowledge will change us and guide us in how to live.
The Bible says, “By wisdom, a house is built; through understanding, it is established and by knowledge are its rooms filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” God grants us wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. We are not born with these traits.
The Bible also says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” Our first step on the right path through life is to believe in God and have a healthy fear of what God is capable of doing. We must first believe in God. We must then realize that God will either allow us into Heaven when we die or send us to Hell. Our belief in God will open our eyes to sin in our lives. God will then grant us repentance. He will lead us to Jesus Christ through whom we may be saved.
