These passages speak of God orchestrating events for His purposes. God had chosen a person from Mesopotamia to begin a nation of people that would serve God and be with God in Heaven. That person’s name was Abraham.
God made a covenant with Abraham. He promised Abraham that Abraham would have many descendants. God made this promise when Abraham was 75 years old, and his wife Sarah was 65 years old. At that time Abraham had no children. However, Abraham believed God.
Twenty-five years later, Abraham and Sarah had a son who they named Isaac. Isaac had a son named Jacob. Jacob had 12 sons who started the 12 tribes of Israel. God then formed Israel into a nation through a series of events.
Jacob had a son named Joseph, who Jacob favored. Joseph’s brothers were jealous of Joseph, and they sold Joseph to traders. The traders took Joseph to Egypt and sold Joseph there.
God blessed Joseph and Joseph was eventually elevated to second in command to the Egyptian Pharaoh.
God then orchestrated a series of events that led Joseph’s father and brothers to move to Egypt. In Egypt, Israel grew into a nation of over one million people. God’s promise to Abraham of having many descendants was certainly fulfilled.
