This Proverb says, “Now then my sons, listen to me and do not depart from the word of my mouth. Keep your way far from her, the adulteress, and do not go near the door of her house. Lest you give your vigor to others, and your years to the cruel one; lest strangers be filled with your strength, and your hard earned goods go to the house of an alien; and you groan at the latter end, when you your flesh and your body are consumed.”
Solomon tells his sons the specific pitfalls of committing adultery or having sexual relations with another man’s wife. Like all sins, there are consequences for committing adultery. The Bible says that if we sow to the flesh, we will reap corruption in the flesh.
All sins have consequences. However some sins have greater consequences. Adultery is a sin that will produce great consequences, both spiritually and physically. Committing adultery is so serious that God made it one of the 10 commandments. Therefore we should purpose in our minds to never commit adultery though temptation to do so may be great at times.
To avoid sinning we should think beyond the sin to the consequences of the sin. Then, the motivation to resist temptation will be strong. Resisting strong temptation is difficult but necessary if we want blessings instead of consequences and death.
