This Proverb says, “The eye that mocks a father, and scorns a mother, the ravens of the valley will peck it out, and the young eagles will eat it.” How we treat our parents is very important to God. God’s 5th Commandment to Israel says, “Honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which your God gives you.” This Commandment is unique in that it comes with a promise of having a long life or a blessing for honoring your father and mother. It is therefore logical to assume that not honoring your parents would lead to a shortened life or early death. This Proverb would indicate that.
Our relationship with our parents is a picture of our relationship with God. We learned to obey our parents as children because of the motivation they provided. We learn to obey God because of the motivation He provides as our Heavenly Father. More importantly, we learn to honor God as we should. We also learn to live according to God’s guidance for us in His Word, the Bible.
The Bible says that living our lives according to the Word of God will keep us on the pathway that leads to Heaven. Therefore, honoring our Heavenly Father, in this manner will lead to Eternal Life in Heaven.
