This Proverb says, “Take his garment when he becomes surety for a stranger.” As Christians we are called to be generous and compassionate. However, we are also called to be good stewards of the things God has given to us. This Proverb indicates that we should be careful if we loan to a person who is unreliable and foolish with their management of money. In this case we should get collateral when we loan.
Sometimes we may be in a situation where an unreliable or foolish person asks for a loan. We should balance our compassion with prudence and secure our loan to them.
Being generous and giving does not require Christians to be gullible or foolish. We are to be good stewards of what God has given to us. We should be prudent in our giving. However, I believe we should favor generosity over prudence.
Another consideration is that we should never put our family at risk in our generosity to others. Our first responsibility should always be to protecting and providing for our family.
