This Proverb says, “There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man swallows it up.” A foolish person is one who does not or cannot discern things of real value. As a result, a foolish person may unintentionally destroy or swallow up things that are truly precious. This can be applied to a marriage, family, and home.

The Bible says, “By wisdom a house is built; through understanding it is established; and through knowledge are its rooms filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” A wise man treasures his wife, children and home. These are true treasures. Material possessions are not. A foolish man does not recognize the value of his wife and children. He may therefore abuse these precious relationships.

Many marriages suffer when a man does not love and treasure his wife. I believe that most failed marriages are due to a husband who does not love his wife. The Bible says that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the Church and gave Himself up for it. Husbands are to give themselves up for their wives.

When a husband treats his wife with love and care, the wife will respond with love. However if a man is abusive toward his wife, his wife will not respond with love.

Therefore we husbands should love our wives and treat them as the treasures they are. This will result in having a happy marriage and home.
