This Proverb says, “A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.” I have found in my life that anger is usually a bad thing. I am less effective when I act out of anger. This is especially true in a marriage. When a married couple respond in anger to each other, the marriage degrades. If the anger is uncontrolled, the marriage will fail. Overlooking a transgression is most important if one wants to preserve their marriage. That requires self-control.
The Bible says that self-control is one of the ‘fruits of the Holy Spirit.’ When we believe in Jesus Christ, and the Bible becomes our guiding light, God will grant us self-control. It takes self-control to quench anger and promote peace and harmony. At times this is not easy. However, it is the best course of action. It enhances relationships and strengthens them.
I believe that there is a spiritual element to anger. I believe that Satan promotes and fans the flames of anger. When the crowds persecuted Paul for speaking the truth, uncontrollable anger was present in the crowd. Uncontrollable anger was the present when the Jews had Jesus crucified. In both cases, Satan was present and encouraging the anger. Knowing this is helpful in controlling our own anger.
