These Proverbs say, “Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed. A man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely word.”
When making important decisions it is helpful to get advice from people we trust. One person cannot know or discern all aspects of a situation requiring a decision. Another person may perceive different aspects or potential pitfalls of a wrong decision. Therefore, it is good to consider other aspects that we may not have considered.
Additionally, when making an important decision we should pray for God’s assistance and guidance. God is our best counselor. Therefore, we should always pray for His help. When we rely on God, He will guide us.
We will be more likely to make our decision according to God’s guidance in His Word. Decisions made in light of God’s Word are always best. Situations will then unfold that will validate our decisions. I have found this to be true in many instances.
The second Proverb indicates the importance of choosing our words carefully when we speak to other people. Certain words are appropriate in certain situations. We should always seek to encourage others. When we use the right words, we will give the other person joy and hope. Our words can have a healing effect. Our words are indeed important.
