In this daily Bible reading is the account of the people once again grumbling against God and Moses. They were tired and discouraged and were becoming impatient with the long journey. So, God once again disciplined them to restore order.

God sent serpents among the people. The serpents bit the people, and many of them died because of the poison. God then instructed Moses to make a serpent out of bronze and put it on a standard.  God said to Moses that if a person is bitten by a serpent, he or she should look at the bronze serpent and they will live. The people complied and were once again reminded that they should respect or fear God.

The Bible says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” This healthy fear is the motivation that turns people from sin. Without this motivation people will continue in their natural and sinful state. People will not turn from sin unless and until they realize that there are serious consequences for sinning, both in this life and after this life.
