In this daily Bible reading is the account of Jesus’ death on the cross. Jesus was arrested early in the morning, the day before the Sabbath day. Saturday is the Sabbath day. So, Jesus was arrested on Friday morning.

The Jewish high priests and the religious counsel accused Jesus of blaspheming and took Jesus to the Roman governor, Pilate, to have Jesus put to death. Pilate tried to release Jesus because Jesus had not committed a crime worthy of death according to Roman law. However, the chief priests stirred up the multitude to insist that Jesus be put to death. So, Pilate appeased the crowd and ordered that Jesus be crucified.

Jesus was then beaten, scourged and crucified. He was crucified at 9 AM on Friday. He died at 3 PM.  Jesus suffered on the cross for six hours.

Jesus was taken down from the cross Friday evening by Joseph of Arimathea who was a member of the Jewish Council. He secretly believed in Jesus and wanted Jesus to have a proper burial. So, Joseph placed Jesus in Joseph’s own tomb.

It is amazing that Jesus was crucified so soon after He was arrested. Jesus was dead less than 12 hours after he was arrested.  It was a rush to injustice.

However, God had orchestrated everything. Jesus fulfilled God’s purpose in being the perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind.
