In this daily Bible reading is the account of Aaron making a golden calf for the people to worship. Aaron did this because the people were restless during Moses’ absence. Moses had gone up on Mount Sinai to speak to God and was absent for some time. The people became anxious and asked Aaron to make them a God or an idol.
The real God is invisible to us, and people over the ages have made physical objects or idols to worship. There are such idols in some Christian churches today. The Roman Catholic Church and the Russian and Greek Orthodox churches have made idols. They call them icons, but they have become idols to many who are not well anchored in the Word of God. Many people are superstitious and think that these icons or idols have powers. The priests of these churches use these idols to their advantage in controlling the people.
The Bible clearly says that we are not to make any likeness of anything in Heaven or on Earth to worship. Idols are clearly forbidden, but they are still used by these churches. This is but one example of how religion has ignored or distorted the Word of God. One must cling to the Word of God, the Bible, as the only source of pure Truth. Religion will not necessarily give us the Truth.
