This Proverb says, “The woman of folly is boisterous, she is naive, and knows nothing. And she sits at the doorway of her house, on a seat by the high place of the city, calling in those who pass by, who are making their paths straight: “Whoever is naive, let him turn in here.” and to him who leads lacks understanding she says, “Stolen water is sweet and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” but he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.”
Strong Temptation
This Proverb illustrates temptation that leads to sin and sin which leads to death. The example given is a woman enticing young men who are trying to make their paths straight. They are trying to walk rightly before God. However, they are young men whose desire for sexual pleasure is very high. Satan knows this. So he provides situations that tempt young men to sin. Resisting this temptation can be very difficult.
To further entice the young men, the woman in the story says that stolen water is sweet and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. In other words, she says that the sin will be secret and nobody will know. However, God will know. He knows everything about us. Specifically he knows the sins we commit. And God will punish us for our sins.
Resisting Temptation
Therefore we must fight temptation to sin. We must resist Satan’s attempts to destroy us. One effective way of doing this is to think beyond the sin to the damage that will be done. Temptation is battled in our minds. If we are firmly anchored in the Word of God, the Bible, we can bring to mind Truths that will motivate us not to sin. In reality, that is our only effective defense if we want to save our spiritual lives.
