This Proverb says, “Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Or can a man walk on hot coals, and his feet not be scorched? So is the one who goes into his neighbor’s wife. Whoever touches her will not go unpunished.” Committing adultery is a serious thing in the eyes of God. It is a violation of one of the 10 commandments. It is also very damaging.

When a person commits adultery they will likely destroy two families. They will destroy their own marriage and family. They will also destroy the marriage and family of the person with whom they committed adultery. This happened to King David.

King David was one of Israel’s best kings. He worshipped and obeyed God, and he led his men to do the same. However, King David committed adultery with his soldier Uriah’s wife, Bathsheba.  Bathsheba became pregnant.  David then tried to cover it up by placing Uriah in a position where he would be killed during a battle.  Uriah was killed.

As a result, God severely punished David for David’s sin. God caused severe disruption and dysfunction among David’s children. David’s son Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar. Tamar ‘s full brother Absalom then murdered his brother Amnon. Later, Absalom would lead a rebellion against David to take David’s throne.

The Bible says that David repented and atoned for committing adultery. The Bible also says that David will be an important leader during Jesus’ Millennial Kingdom. However, David was severely punished here on Earth for committing adultery with Bathsheba.
