This Proverb continues the characterization of an excellent wife. It says, “Strength and dignity are her, an excellent wife’s clothing, and she smiles at her future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.” Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain; But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gate.”
An excellent wife is one who fears the Lord and walks according to the Word of God. Fearing the Lord and living according to His guidance results in an excellent life for the person who desires to do so. Living such a life requires diligence, perseverance, and effort. It is not a life for the lazy. It is not a life for the irresponsible. It is not a life for those given to sin.
Living a good life is the result of choosing to obey God. All human beings are free to choose how to live. However, choices have consequences: both good and bad. Every person is accountable to God for the choices they make in life. We only have ourselves to blame if our choices keep us out of Heaven. That is certainly worth considering when choosing how to live.
