This Proverb says, “Where there is no vision, people are unrestrained, but happy is he who keeps the law.” The word ‘vision’ in this passage refers to God’s revelatory Word to us. During Old Testament times, God was still providing new revelation to the people. They did not have a complete Bible as we do today. So, they did not have God’s written guidance.
People without God’s guidance tend to go their own way. They are unrestrained. They naturally turn to their sin and are then given over to sin. This will lead to their spiritual death and eternal judgment. The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death, and the free gift of God is Eternal Life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This Proverb also says, “Happy is he who keeps the law.” Those who know God’s Word and live their lives accordingly are on solid ground and will ultimately be given Eternal Life in Heaven. Today, we are blessed because we have the complete Word of God in the Bible. However, we must choose to read it. We must also choose to live our lives according to God’s guidance.
Unfortunately, many reject the Bible. They would rather choose to live unrestrained lives and follow their natural sinful pursuits. They do not want to be accountable to God for their sin. The problem is that refusing to believe in God and follow His Word will not remove accountability for sin.
The best course of action is to embrace God’s Word and live by God’s guidance for us. That will require self-discipline and perseverance. However, it will produce blessings in one’s life and lead to an eternity of joy in God’s paradise.
