This Proverb says, “How blessed is the man who fears always, but he who hardens his heart will fall into calamity.” This Proverb speaks of having a healthy fear of God, rather than being fearful in general. Being a coward is not a good thing. However having a healthy fear of God is a good thing. The Bible says, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.”
If we have a healthy fear of God, then we are motivated to live rightly before God. We should fear God like we feared our fathers when we were children. We obeyed our fathers because we were fearful of the punishment he would inflict on us if we were disobedient to him.
We are all God’s children. He created us. Therefore He will guide us and correct us when we don’t obey Him. His discipline is for our own good. It is constructive and guides us to good and right behavior. This will result in blessings in our lives.
On the other hand, those who do not fear God or those who do not believe in God will not receive blessings. They are like rebellious children who disobey their father. Their lives will be characterized by calamities and pain.
Unfortunately, those who do not fear God and have bad lives as a result may not be aware of what caused their bad lives. They may not perceive the linkage between their hardships and their rejection of God. Therefore, they are not motivated to change their behavior. The Bible says that such people will not be allowed into Heaven after they die. They will experience misery and pain for all eternity. What a tragedy.
