This Proverb says, “A sated man loathes honey, but to a famished man any bitter thing is sweet.” A sated man is a person who has much. Perhaps the person is rich and has many possessions. On the other hand, a the famished man is a the person who has very little.
As this Proverb suggests, the rich person with many possessions is less appreciative of what they have. They may not even enjoy their possessions.
On the other hand a poor person is very appreciative of little things that come their way. Therefore, a poor person may be more aware of God’s presence and be thankful to God for what they receive.
The Bible says that God favors the lowly and downhearted over the rich and prideful people. The lonely and downhearted are more apt to trust God. They will indeed be more grateful for the things that God provides them.
So then, should we strive to be poor? The Bible says, “Let us neither be too rich nor too poor, and let us not be deceived.” Extremes in either direction are not good. Rather, we should seek moderation.
Being extremely rich will turn us away from reliance on God. We may become enslaved to our possessions. We may focus on our possessions rather than God.
Therefore, we should be content with what we have and be grateful for the things God has provided for us. Our focus should be on God and not our possessions. With such a focus we will be more likely to trust in God and enjoy our lives. That is the best way to live.
