This Proverb speaks about a sluggard, a lazy person. It points out some characteristics of a sluggard as follows. “The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A lion is in the open square!” The door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed. The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; He is weary of bringing it out to his mouth again. The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can give a discreet answer.””
A sluggard is a person who avoids and resists work. This person will make any excuse to get out of working. As a result they become unproductive and basically worthless to society. They contribute nothing.
Unfortunately, this is destructive to both themselves and their families. Worse, it is destructive to what God may have planned for them. Hence, they waste the valuable life God has given to them.
I believe that God has a purpose for each and every one of us. He created each of us for a reason. The fact that we exist is that God wanted us to exist. Therefore we should be diligent in pursuing whatever task we may find before us. The Bible says, “Whatever you do, do it as unto the Lord.”
We should therefore realize that God has given us whatever task we face. With that mindset we will be motivated to do it well and please the Lord. That mindset is better than laziness, and will more likely keep us on the path that leads to Heaven.
