This Proverb says, “Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances. Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear.” The words we speak to others are very important. Our words can be helpful. They can also cause damage, lasting damage. Therefore, we should be careful when choosing our words.
As this Proverb says, good words or good advice communicated at the right time and in the right circumstances are as valuable as gold to the listener. For example, one of our friends or relatives may be in great distress because of their situation. They may have lost hope, or they may not know how to proceed with their lives. Our carefully chosen words may provide encouragement to that person. Our words may restore their hope and point them to the right path forward.
Knowing the right words to say is not something that happens by accident. Having the wisdom and understanding to provide good advice only comes from being grounded in the Truth. Wisdom only comes from being anchored in the Word of God. Being well-grounded in the Bible will equip us with the right words to say to encourage others. Our words, influenced by the Bible’s guidance, will indeed become like ‘apples of gold in settings of silver’ to others.
