This Proverb says, “He kisses the lips who gives a right answer.” The New English Bible translates, “A straightforward answer is as good as a kiss of friendship.” A kiss in our society signals physical affection. However, in many societies a kiss represents allegiance or friendship with no physical meaning.

This Proverb is talking about honesty. It means being honest with others about our own failures and shortcomings. Everybody has failures and shortcomings. We usually try to hide and conceal our vulnerabilities and flaws. However, when we are honest with a friend about our own failures, it is helpful to the other person. It gives them confidence to honestly present themselves in return.

When this happens, people are inclined to help one another. Our weakness may spiritually strengthen another person as they try to help us. Therefore, honesty promotes a healthy relationship. We then help one another along life’s journey.

That is one of the main benefits of married life. Husbands and wives help each other with their shortcomings. Marriage provides an environment of mutual support.

Therefore, we should strive for healthy and supportive relationships with our friends. We should not lie and deceive. Rather, we should speak truth in love, and not judge one another.
