This Proverb says, “Listen to your father who begot you, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” One of God’s 10 commandments is “Honor your mother and father.” we are to always treat our mother and father with respect regardless of how they may annoy us from time to time. We are never to scold them or speak harshly to them, though it may be tempting to do at times.

In addition to honoring and respecting our parents, we should listen to their guidance and advice. They have experienced more life than we have and may have more insight regarding the outcome of certain situations.

However, not all parents are created equal. Some people have good parents and some have bad parents. Some parents have pursued a sinful life. So, not all of their advice may be good. For example, we should not follow the advice of a parent who advises us to lie, cheat or take advantage of others.

Therefore, as we grow older we should seek the counsel of others who live rightly and honestly. We should seek the counsel of those who live their lives according to the Word of God.

Some parents may live their lives according to the Bible’s guidance. However, some do not. I believe that God will help the children of such parents by leading them to people who will provide wise counsel and guidance.
