This Proverb says, “Do not say, “I will repay evil.” Wait for the Lord and He will save you.” When someone wrongs you the natural urge or desire is to get even. We want to do to that person the bad thing they have done to us. However, like many of our natural urges that is the wrong response. The right response is to let God deal with it.
The Bible says, “Vengeance is mine, sayeth the Lord. I will repay it.” God does not want us to return evil for evil because that would strengthen our sinful nature.
In His ‘Sermon on the Mount,’ Jesus said, “If a person slaps you on the cheek, turn the other cheek.” Jesus also said be kind to your enemies. “If they are thirsty, give them something to drink for in so doing you will heap burning coals on their head.”
Resisting revenge and not returning evil for evil is difficult to do. It takes conscious effort. So then, how do we get the ability to do this.
The Bible says that when we believe in Jesus, God will give us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us. We will then receive the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Two of those fruits are ‘gentleness’ and ‘self-control.’ When we have these qualities within us, we will be able to respond calmly and not seek revenge.
Believing in Jesus will result in many benefits while we are alive. More importantly, believing in Jesus will lead us to Heaven.
