This Proverb says in part, “He who curses his father or his mother, his lamp will go out in time of darkness.” The Bible indicates that God will condemn a person who does not respect his or her parents. One of God’s Ten Commandments says, “Honor thy father and mother.” It also indicates that those honoring their father and mother will live a long life.
If honoring mother and father leads to living a long life, then it is reasonable to assume that not honoring mother and father may well result in dying young. Their ‘lamp will go out.’
Another point to consider is that if a person’s light goes out in darkness, that person will become lost. That person will not know where which way to turn. A person who curses or dishonors mother or father will likely not listen to the parents’ wise counsel.
Parents are a guiding light for their children in teaching them how to live. A person who dishonors father or mother rejects their parents’ informed guidance. Accordingly, that person will likely become lost.
Children may disagree with parents. However, they must never dishonor their parents. Honoring their parents will result in receiving God’s blessings. Dishonoring parents will result in God’s punishment.
