This Proverb says, “He who goes about as a slanderer reveals secrets, therefore do not associate with a gossip.” This is good advice. If you associate with or are friends with a person who gossips about others, that person may gossip about you as well.
Gossip can be very damaging, because it can destroy another person’s reputation. A person’s reputation affects how others perceive that person, good or bad. A person can lose credibility and trust. Unfortunately, trust is easy to lose but hard to gain.
Gossip is especially damaging to a Christian. A Christian is a person who represents Jesus. Therefore, Christians are expected to walk rightly with good moral values. People will take note of how a Christian lives their life. Having a good reputation is essential for a Christian. A person who gossips can ruin a Christian’s reputation and harm the message of Jesus.
Furthermore, a person who gossips may not accurately present a story about an another person. They may embellish or distort the facts of a situation. Unfortunately, people tend to believe what a gossip says.
Therefore, we should follow the advice of this Proverb and avoid associating with a person who gossips.
