In this Proverb Solomon speaks to his son about the benefits of inclining one’s heart to truly understand the world around them. Solomon says, “Incline your heart to understanding; For if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver and search for her as hidden treasure; then you will discern the fear of the Lord, and discover the knowledge of the Lord.” Solomon was speaking from experience.
When Solomon assumed the Throne of Israel from his father, King David, God appeared to Solomon in a dream. God asked Solomon what he desired from God. Solomon asked God for wisdom, so that Solomon would be a good king. God was pleased with Solomon’s request and granted Solomon’s wish. Solomon was wiser than any other human being on the Earth. He ruled Israel well when he followed God’s guidance.
In this Proverb, Solomon is also imploring his son to follow in Solomon’s footsteps and to be wise. He was influencing his son to understand God’s Word and follow God’s guidance. Solomon knew that living by God’s guidance would provide a good life for his son.
We, too, should follow God’s guidance if we desire to have a good life. God’s guidance for us is found in His Word, the Bible. The Bible tells us how to live if we want God’s blessing. More importantly, the Bible tells us how to live if we want to go to Heaven after we die.
