This Proverb says, “Listen to counsel and accept discipline that you may be wise the rest of your days.” Discipline is a good thing. As parents we discipline our children for wrongdoing. In like manner, God disciplines us for our wrongdoings.

God is our Heavenly Father. He created us and brought us into the world. As a father, he loves us and wants only the best for us. He wants to guide us to live our lives in a way that produces a good life, a life with blessings and joy. To that end God gave us a guide book by which to live. He gave us His Word, the Bible.

In our households we provide guidance for our children. We give them rules by which to live. When our children break those rules, we discipline them so that they are motivated to follow those rules. We as parents know what is best for our children.

In like manner God knows what is best for us. Accordingly, He has given us rules by which we should live. When we depart from those rules, God will discipline us so that we will be motivated to follow His rules. As this Proverb says, we should accept God’s discipline knowing it is good for us. This is the best attitude we can have. It leads to a far better life.  More importantly, it leads to Eternal Life in Heaven after we die.
