This Proverb states the following: “A man of many friends comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” As I pondered this Proverb, I came to realize that a person with many friends is likely a person who seeks to be popular. To be popular one must seek to please everybody. The only way to do this is to compromise one’s values and beliefs.

Perhaps the best example of this situation is a believer who seeks to be popular with the world and its values. The world’s values are contrary to what the Bible teaches. Therefore, one cannot be popular unless he or she compromises their Biblical values. When one does that they are on a path to destruction. They will indeed come to ruin.

On the other hand if one has a friend who is a fellow believer, that person can live according to Biblical values without persecution from their friend. A true friend who is a fellow believer will be supportive and helpful at all times. This is very important during times of trouble.

A true friend is actually closer to a person then that person’s biological brother may be. A true friend will have your best interest at heart, and always have seek for your good. Therefore as a believer we should be joined to other believers and together walk the pathway that leads to life.
