This Proverb speaks about the power of the tongue. It says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” What we say has tremendous power regarding how others are impacted. We can say words that encourage others or say words that hurt others. We can build others up or tear others down.
Words can have a lifetime impact on others, especially on family members. Therefore we should think before we speak. We should choose our words carefully.
The Bible says that proper words are like “apples of gold in settings of silver.” Such words are extremely valuable in how they may impact others. For example, words of encouragement to our children may set them on a path in life that will lead to very good things for them. Such words can mean the difference between a successful life or a life of failure.
The Bible also says that we will be held accountable for the words we have spoken to others. We will be rewarded for words we have spoken that have encouraged others. We will also be punished for words we have spoken carelessly or thoughtlessly that have damaged others.
Therefore, we should choose our words carefully and seek to encourage. As grandma used to say, “If you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all.”
