This Proverb says, “A worker’s appetite works for him, for his hunger urges him on.”

This speaks of the source of one’s motivation. What drives a person to do or say something? In this case it is a person’s hunger for food that drives them to work, so that they can earn money to purchase what they need. A person may also be motivated to work for the shelter they need.

In a larger sense we are all motivated to pursue or work for the things we perceive we need. Motivation to work for the things that are necessary for our basic survival come naturally. However, how do we acquire the motivation for things that do not involve basic survival needs?

For example, how do we gain motivation to believe in God and live rightly before Him. The Bible says that our initial motivation to believe in God comes from our awareness of His existence in the creation around us. We then gain an awareness of His power over life and death and his power to punish us for misbehaving.

The Bible says, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” When we realize God’s power we gain motivation to obey Him. We then become motivated to understand what He desires of us through His Word, the Bible.

As we read the Bible, our motivation changes to from fear to a desire to please God. We learn to love God and realize we need His presence in our lives. We are then motivated to keep God present in our lives by walking rightly before Him. As a result, we pursue righteousness and walk the pathway that leads to Heaven after we die.
