This Proverb says, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”
As human beings we like people to say pleasant things to us. We are happy when people encourage us and help us through difficult situations. Pleasant words from other people put us into a good mood and strengthen our confidence. Being happy, confident, and peaceful lowers our blood pressure and is healing to our bones.
On the other hand, harsh words raise blood pressure and put us into a bad mood. When people speak harsh or degrading words to us or about us we become discouraged and defensive. We may become angry and lose our confidence to proceed.
Therefore, if we know how the flavor of words affect us, we should carefully consider the words we speak to others. We should always seek to encourage or edify others with our words. And we should consciously avoid speaking harmful words. In this regard we should heed the advice of those who say, “If you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all.”
The Bible says that God will judge us for the words we have spoken to others. One of God’s commands for us is to ‘love our neighbor as we love ourselves.’ Speaking kind and pleasant word to others demonstrates that love.
