These passages contain two Proverbs. The first Proverb says, “A faithful witness will not lie, but a false witness will speak lies.”

The Bible says that God hates lying. The Bible also characterizes Satan as the father of lies. There is no truth in him. Lying is quite damaging. It can lead people to have erroneous opinions and take wrong actions. Lying can lead people astray. Satan’s lies, which the world embraces, can lead people to Hell.

There is only one defense against lying. That defense is knowing the Truth. How can we know the Truth? We can know the Truth through Jesus Christ. Jesus is the living Word of God. Therefore we learn the Truth through reading the Word of God, the Bible. When we know the Truth we will be able to identify the lies that surround us. Then, we will have the right opinions. Then, we will take the right courses of action.

The second Proverb says, “A scoffer seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge is easy to him who has understanding.”

A scoffer does not believe in God. Therefore, a scoffer rejects and mocks the Word of God, which is Truth. A scoffer cannot find wisdom because wisdom is only acquired through belief in God.

On the other hand, a person of understanding believes in God and lives by the Word of God. A person of understanding correctly interprets the knowledge they acquire. They gain wisdom through their knowledge and understanding.
