This Proverb says, “In the mouth of the foolish is a rod for his back, but the lips of the wise will preserve them.” This can be applied to many situations. One situation that comes to mind this morning involves a marital relationship.

In a marriage, contentious discussions may occur from time to time. I have found that words spoken in anger can produce bad results. If a husband speaks words that hurt his wife, he may well find himself sleeping on the couch that night. In extreme cases he may become estranged from his wife.

Therefore, a husband should be wise in choosing his words to his wife. He should not try to win an argument with his wife. There is no winning if he finds himself alone. I have found that in a marriage, man can either be right or he can be happy. He cannot be both.

My advice to the husband is to be wise and stop trying to win arguments. Rather, speak words that of comfort and encourage your wife. In so doing you will preserve and enhance your relationship.
