This Proverb says, “A wise son accepts his father’s discipline, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.” What is a scoffer? A scoffer is a person who is likely to mock his father’s advice as being foolish nonsense. A scoffer is also arrogant and prideful, trusting their own sinful nature. So, when a father of a scoffer offers sound advice a scoffing son rejects or mocks it. Such good advice falls on deaf ears.

On the other hand, a wise son is receptive to his father’s advice. Such a son knows that his father loves him and has his best interests at heart. Therefore, a wise son will listen to his father and accept his father’s discipline and guidance. Such a son will also likely believe in God and follow God’s guidance in the Word of God.

Probably the best example of a wise son who followed his father’s advice is Jesus Christ. The Bible says that Jesus prayed frequently to His Father, God, for direction and guidance. And Jesus obeyed God. Jesus believed that God the Father had Jesus’ best interest at heart. Jesus obeyed God in all things including accepting Jesus’ own death on a cross.

God is our Heavenly father. Therefore, we should be wise children who follow God’s direction in His Word. We should accept God’s discipline when he disciplines us for our sins. Additionally, we should realize that God has our best interest at heart, and He will lead us to Heaven.
